The Caribbean by Sea

The islands of the Caribbean would leave anyone spoilt for choice. The Carnival Fascination cruise ship allowed me a taste of a few of these Caribbean islands this past week. We started in Barbados then visited the islands of St.Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas USVI. I always knew I loved the Caribbean, being from Barbados but my heart has grown with even more love since this trip.

St. Lucia

It was not my first time to St. Lucia and it definitely won’t be my last. We did a tour of the island with a local kindhearted taxi driver. We saw the Pitons, Marigot Bay and Diamond Botanical Gardens. My favourite stop, however, was a lady selling fruit on the side of the road. I’m a sucker for fruit- guava, bananas, golden apple, papaya, sugar cane- I want it all!

St Kitts

St. Kitts was next on the itinerary. The port is beautiful and very visitor friendly. We took another taxi tour. Taxi tours were the trend for the week and what seemed to be the most economical way to see the islands in a short time. The people really made St. Kitts from our taxi driver Bob to the vendors who encouraged me in a full on photo-shoot behind their stalls, even instructing me how to pose!

St. Maarten/ St. Martin

This island of luxury sported expensive yachts, celebrity homes and the popular Maho Beach where airplanes fly at an amusingly and uncomfortably close distance above enthusiastic onlookers heads. Yet again I ran into nice people willing to share their culture and history of the two countries(St. Maarten & St. Martin) on one island.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico was inspiring! I spent the day walking the streets of Old San Juan. It felt magical like I was seeing a story book come to life. The colours were exuberant like the rainbow hand painted the town. The island has all the perks of being a U.S territory but all the charm of island life.

St. Thomas

St. Thomas was picture perfect! It was one of the smaller islands visited. Though it is small there is no shortage of breathtaking views- crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and mountainous terrain. It’s the perfect relaxing spot!
